Stranger Things Franchise Expands with New Animated Series

The Stranger Things universe is expanding yet again with the announcement of an animated series set in the show’s world. According to a release, Netflix has ordered an untitled series, which is being developed by Eric Robles and Flying Bark Productions.

The plot details remain under wraps, but the Duffer brothers are excited about the project. In a statement, the co-creators said, “We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling.”

The animated series is the latest extension of the Stranger Things brand. In 2022, the Duffer brothers formed Upside Down Pictures to oversee original and also all Stranger Things-related projects, including the animated series. Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps, who have executive produced the live-action series, are also involved in the animated show. The company is also, in addition to other announced projects, working on a live-action series adaptation of the popular Japanese manga and anime series Death Note.

In addition to the animated series, fans can look forward to a live-action spinoff and a stage show. Details on the live-action spinoff are still scarce, but the Duffers have said it won’t focus on characters like Eleven or Steve Harrington. Meanwhile, the stage show, titled Stranger Things: The First Shadow, will take place in Hawkins in 1959 and debut in London’s West End.

Seasons 1-4 of Stranger Things are available on Netflix.
