In a recent interview with developer Spiders, new details about the upcoming Action-RPG Steelrising shares action focus and souls-like discovery.
Steelrising Will Be More Souls Inspired, With a Focus on Action and Discovery
Steelrising is the next Action-RPG to be coming from developer Spiders. With the recent announcement of Greedfall 2, it’s interesting to find out more about how Steelrising will differ from the party-based RPG. The developer had a recent interview with PlayStation Universe, which revealed more about the scope of the game, future content and the type of experience players will have in this mechanic-punk title.
Steelrising sets to be a departure from the dialogue focused Greedfall, with plenty of action and discovery.
Less Talk More Action
One interesting point is Steelrising will be very much action orientated. While Greedfall‘s focus was on narrative and told the story through dialogue, Steelrising will be more attuned to leaving it “up to the player to understand the story and piece it together”. The game also sets to be quite inspired by the souls franchise as video game producer, co-founder and CEO of Spiders, Jehanne Rousseau explained that the design team are huge fans of the games.
Another way Steelrising will differ from what Spiders has done before is that the combat will be focused on dealing damage depending on the location of the body. One of the biggest challenges for the team was to more to a different animation system and visual effects system because of the type of combat involved.
Assist Mode
Those who may not be veterans of souls-like games worry not, as Spiders will have an assist mode which will allows players to tweak their experience of the game, letting players enjoy the game “without having to learn all the patterns”. How in-depth this system will be is still unknown but is an intriguing feature. Rousseau also explains it will help those who have disabilities to play Steelrising and hopes it will be a part of future titles.
Armor Amore
The visuals of this French Revolution, automaton inspired world are creative and also come with some very beautiful armor. However, if you were hoping to have some sort of transmog system, the developer shares that this won’t be the case. But they may look into it. Whether Steelrising will get a layered armor system like in Monster Hunter Rise seems too early to tell, but doesn’t seem to be focus. They could always introduce a system later like they did with Rise.
Greedfall had a lot of customisation options when it came to armor, including changing the look of it depending on what is slotted in the weapon/armor pieces. Spiders are no stranger to in-depth systems.
Future Content
As for future content, Spiders has big plans for downloadable content, with a “very big DLC planned”. This will consist of new weapons, and new characters, as well as some smaller DLCs. According to the developer the best way to get your hands on extra content will be to pre-order and get the collectors edition. Steelrising will be released on September 8th 2022 for Playstation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. You may also be interested in the upcoming sequel Greedfall 2: The Dying World which sets to release in 2024.
