Star Citizen releases a new Legatus backer bundle that costs $48,000

Would you rather buy a reasonably reliable car or a whole bunch of internet spaceships? If for some reason you chose the latter, then Star Citizen has you covered thanks to the newest Legatus pack that went on sale last week, which costs an eye-watering $48,000.

“Ahead of all others, this definitive armada is an equal match to the noble title of Legatus Navium. Comprised of over 175 vessels from every manufacturer of note, this perfect collection, including all ships released and concepted through 2953, empowers every fleet commander to forge a lasting legacy, leading humanity towards a brighter future.”

Indeed, this bundle offers up every single ship that’s currently either in-game or in-concept as of this year as well as a whole slew of cosmetics, multiple paint jobs, lifetime insurance for all of the vehicles, some armor pieces, a multi-tool, and a Karna Ascension rifle that hasn’t even been made yet; it’s expected to be added sometime in the first quarter of 2024.

As you can imagine, this pack has raised a whole lot of eyebrows among the SC community, though responses appear to be aghast disappointment or jokes rather than outright anger at the bundle being offered.

Incidentally, Star Citizen won our Worst Business Model award for 2023. Just in case you were wondering why (or were one of the people harassing us on social media about it), allow us to enter another piece of evidence.

Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2022, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $600M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
