One of the biggest hurdles was the COVID-19 pandemic which constrained the company’s ability to meet demand. Consequently, the PS5 has sold 40 million units since launch in 2020. This is a good number, but the PS4 managed to do it in about two and a half years.
High hopes for Spider-Man 2
Sony is hoping to sell 25 million PS5s this fiscal year. Supply chain issues have been resolved, and the company has also revealed smaller models set to release this holiday, which should help boost sales as well.
There is reason to believe that Spider-Man 2 could help Sony achieve its ambitious goals. The first game from Insomniac, as well as Miles Morales, together sold 33 million copies. Its proven track record for drawing in fans makes Spider-Man one of the PS5’s key franchises.
