The survival horror simulator arrives in Early Access on February 23.

Endnight Games’ Sons of the Forest has become Steam’s most wishlisted title. The survival horror simulator arrives in Early Access on February 23.

Published by Newnight, Sons of the Forest is the sequel to The Forest, an open world survival game released in 2018. The Forest put players in the shoes of Eric LeBlanc, who must search for his son in a cannibal-infested forest after a plane crash. Featuring non-linear gameplay, a crafting system, and an eerie environment, The Forest drew critical acclaim and sold more than five million copies by the end of its launch year. Originally announced in 2019, Sons of The Forest has been in the works for a long time and faced several delays, but at long last, the eagerly anticipated sequel is close to getting into players’ hands.

On Steam’s Top Wishlists page, Sons of the Forests has risen above Bethesda Game Studios’ Starfield, an open world role-playing game set in space. Legions of fans who enjoyed The Elder Scrolls and Fallout have wishlisted Starfield, as it will be the studio’s “first new universe in 25 years,” according to the game’s Steam page. Sons of the Forest has also been wishlisted more than two other highly anticipated titles, both with launch dates yet to be announced: Party Animals, a cute and casual action game, and Hollow Knight: Silksong, the sequel to 2017’s hit metroidvania Hollow Knight.

Sons of the Forest takes on a similar premise as its predecessor, this time placing the player on a remote island rather than a peninsula. The protagonist is tasked with locating a billionaire who has gone missing and surviving against cannibals. As the unnamed main character, the player must rely on their crafting and building skills to survive. Players will have the option to take on the challenges of The Forest’s sequel with their friends via multiplayer mode.

The surge in wishlists likely comes from Endnight Games’ latest announcement about Early Access, which was made on February 3 on Steam and social media. It’s also no surprise that with Early Access approaching in just a few days, more players have added the game with a definite release date to their wishlists than other titles that are only “coming soon.”

Currently, Early Access for Sons of the Forest will only be available for Windows. “We are hoping to be in Early Access for around six to eight months, but this could change,” the developer stated on Steam. “We will leave Early Access when we are certain this is the best version of the game possible.”
