Maxis has added trans-inclusive and new disability options for character creation in The Sims 4. Posted on both the game’s website and official Twitter account, Maxis made the announcement that the inclusivity options would be added Wednesdat along with console gameplay improvements.
The new update adds chest binders, surgery scars, and shapewear for players who want to make a trans-identifying Sim. For those not famliar with the terminology, binders and shapewear are used by people who identify as trans to better align with their gender identity. Many trans individuals also wear these as an alternative to surgery, as they may be uncomfortable with or unable to currently afford surgery options.
The update says, “Under the Body category, all players can find a Body Scars category with an option for Teen and older male Sims (masculine or feminine frame) to add a top surgery scar to their Sims”. This update is being added to the base game so that all players have access to the gender-affirming options. Additionally, the update includes medical wear such as hearing aids and glucose monitors, further adding inclusive options for players of all different kinds of backgrounds.
The console improvements are meant to bring the game more in line with the PC version by giving players more options, especially in build mode. For Playstation consoles specifically, the game has been given the option for UI scaling in the game itself. Before the update, players had to go into the console options to set their preferred screen space to achieve the UI placement they wanted. Now, players can set these options in the game with the built-in wizard running placement, which can be adjusted by players manually in the options. The update also adds cursor scaling and a permanently open catalog in build mode, making navigation easier. Finally, for those looking for the most immersion, a light switch has been added as a form of decor for rooms, making the room more realistic, even if it is non-functional.
The inclusivity update is being celebrated by the Sims community, as it is another step towards representation. While The Sims’ creators strive for inclusivity, there have been many who felt underrepresented or unseen. This update, along with previous updates to add Sim pronouns and making all clothing options viable on both the masculine and feminine body types, demonstrates Maxis’ efforts to create a better sense of inclusion for the Sims community. While the update is not currently stable, with reports of scars not appearing properly or crashes occurring, there is still plenty for Sims fans to be excited about.
