Simon Cowell addresses Britain’s Got Talent ‘rule break’ after ‘chaotic’ moment | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

During the latest instalment of Britain’s Got Talent, a dance group called Unity moved the judges and audience to tears with an “astonishing” routine to Wrabel’s The Village.

After their performance, the crowd started calling the judges, Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and Bruno Tonolio, to hit the Golden Buzzer.

However, all of their buzzers had been used up on other acts earlier on in the auditioning process.

But Simon threw out the rulebook and pressed the Golden Buzzer to send Unity straight through to the semi-finals in a Britain’s Got Talent first.

Simon, 63, has now spoken out about his rogue decision to press the Golden Buzzer twice this year.

Speaking to Express.co.uk and other media, Simon shared: “There’s one Golden Buzzer moment which has never happened in all the years I had done the show.

“It wasn’t really supposed to happen because we’d run out [of Golden Buzzers] and it was kind of chaotic at this moment because the audience would not let this go.

“I thought they weren’t going to leave so we said, ‘You know what, why don’t we just give the audience a Golden Buzzer?’ And that’s what happened.”

When asked about the rule book being ripped up, Simon clapped back: “I don’t think there has ever been a rule book for this show!”

Amanda chimed in: “That’s been the best thing about doing this show. He hates rules, which is why there have never been any.

“It’s brilliant because we have been left to our own devices the whole time which is a massive risk.”

Simon also recalled the first time he ever pressed the Golden Buzzer: “My [first] Golden Buzzer was absolutely incredible, I’ve seen it back and it’s an amazing moment.”

Simon awarded his first Golden Buzzer to 13-year-old treble singer Malakai Bayoh, who attends The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School in London, after being blown away by his vocal range.

ITV has confirmed this year’s semi-finals begin on Monday, May 29, airing each night until Friday, June 2.

The 2023 final will be held on Saturday, June 3 on ITV at 7.30pm, with the winner gracing the stage at The Royal Variety Performance and taking home £250,000.
