Shadow and Bone season two has just arrived on Netflix and Aleksander Kirigan (played by Ben Barnes) returned with a vengeance. The Darkling wanted revenge on Alina (Jessie Mei Li) after their feud at The Fold. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about what happened at the end of the new series.

What happened at the end of Shadow and Bone season 2?

There were two storylines to season two as The Crows and Alina and Mal were on separate missions.

In the final episode, the Grisha joined forces with their former rivals in order to take down General Kirigan once and for all.

Meanwhile, Kirigan’s mother Baghra (Zoë Wanamaker) was working with Alina to achieve the same goal.

In order to destroy The Fold and Kirigan, they needed to locate the Firebird.

The Firebird is a mythical bird believed to be the heart and soul of the Ravkan empire.

Various myths say its song could send an entire army to sleep and it has the ability to heal wounds.

By the end of season two, Baghra discovered Mal was a Firebird descendant and he would need to sacrifice himself to destroy The Fold.

As Kirigan finally caught up with Alina and Baghra, it was Baghra who took the fall by trying to take down her own son.

She managed to break the bond between him and Alina, but was killed in the process, leaving Alina devastated.

When Mal and Alina were finally reunited, he broke the news to her about his fate.

When she discovered he was the Firebird, she immediately knew her love would have to die.

The episode ended with Kirigan’s hand being repaired and once he was healed, he saw what his mother had known all along.

He discovered Mal was the Firebird, meaning Mal is likely to be his next target.

In the original books by Leigh Bardugo, the Firebird is mentioned when it tries to kill Alina and Mal in Ruin and Rising.

They realise Mal is the true third amplifier after he saved Alina from falling off a cliff.

His hand sent a surge through her that she recognised as an amplifier.

After this, the Firebird stopped and left the two, sensing they no longer wished to kill it.

Elsewhere in the season two finale, The Crows were on the brink of death after they fell into a trap whilst trying to locate the sword they had been looking for.

Thankfully, Wylan Hendriks (Jack Wolfe) was able to find an antidote and save them.

They discovered where the Disciple had been hiding and it was in fact his wife who owned the sword.

After a huge battle, she finally agreed to hand the artefact over to them, which would help Alina take down Kirigan.

As for the show’s future, Netflix is yet to officially renew the show for a third season.

However, having left the final episode on the ultimate cliffhanger, it appears the creators are confident.

Season three will see Mal and Alina attempting everything in their power to find another alternative to Mal’s sacrifice.

Shadow and Bone season 2 is on Netflix now.
