Rumour: Might & Magic Fates Open World AAA Being Developed by Ubisoft Shanghai

The classic RPG series Might & Magic could be rebooting under developer Ubisoft Shanghai as news of domain for Might & Magic: Fates registrations pop up online.

Rumour: Might & Magic Fates Open World AAA Being Developed by Ubisoft Shanghai

New speculation arises as domain registrations under the IP come into the spotlight with the name Might & Magic: Fates. Just last month netizens by the name of Kurakasis on X (Twitter) shared screenshots of new registrations for the domains mightandmagicfates.com and might-and-magic-fates.com under Ubisoft Entertainment.

Another possible relation to the project is the previous job listings for Ubisoft Shanghai a year ago which mentioned “a new Might & Magic AAA game”. For the position of world director, one of the requirements was for the candidate to have experience in open-world game development.

Dungeon Crawling at It’s Finest

The franchise Might & Magic has a history that goes back to 1986, when the first title in the series appeared as an early roleplaying game in Might and Magic Book One: The Secret of the Inner Sanctum, released for the Apple II, Mac, MS-DOS, the Commodore 64, NES MSX and PC-Engine. The game has simple instructions in which the player can command via keyboard input, in a dungeon crawler experience.

There were series of Might & Magic games under New World Computing until it became a part of 3DO in 1996. 3DO would later go under, which was followed by Ubisoft purchasing the rights of Might & Magic for $1.3 million. The last entry in the series was Might & Magic X: Legacy developed by Limbic Entertainment which released in 2014 for PC and Mac. This was the first mainline entry in 12 years, which is just over a decade between entries. There were also spinoff titles such as the Action-RPG Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (2006). As well as the turn-based strategy title Might & Magic Heroes VII (2015).

It Could Be Fates

The series could be finally gaining its revival under Ubisoft Shanghai which was formed 27 years ago. The studio has gone on to work on such franchises as Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and more. It’s also possible they could be developing multiple titles.

As we haven’t heard of anything official it might be a ways off until we hear any official news on the Might & Magic: Fates, but it’s interesting to see info on this series resurface. The 10th anniversary for the series will be in January 2024, so it’s possible we could hear something then. Either way, we’ll keep an eye out. What kind of game would want Fates to be? Dungeon crawler? Action-RPG? Or something adventure-based? Let us now in the comments below.
