League of Legends fighting game Project L has received an in-depth gameplay trailer today, detailing the game’s key aspects, such as movement, abilities, combos, and tag system. Illaoi has also been confirmed to be joining the roster of playable characters in Project L, which also includes Jinx, Darius, Ekko, and Ahri.
Riot Games has released a developer diary for the upcoming fighting game, giving players their first breakdown of the tag system, stages, and battles. According to the development team, combat in Project L is built on a tag system, which includes assist action, handshake tag, and dynamic save. Starting from assist action, players will use it to call in their backup champion to perform a special attack. Each champion can use assist action twice in combat, helping players to increase their damage output when needed. Players can also hold the input to get a charged assist in order to extend their combos.
The handshake tag, as its name implies, allows players to swap between point and assist characters during combat. Players can control the incoming assist character by using the handshake tag, as they can also squeeze their opponents with a combination of different abilities. Dynamic save, on the other hand, lets players call their assist champion in an attempt to save their point champion. If players use the dynamic save at the right time, the results can be explosive enough to push the opposite champion back. However, it can also be countered if players are too predictable.
As for the character capabilities, they can jump, dash, run, chain dash, long jump, and super jump in fast-paced combat, where their offense will be rewarded. Every character will have their own mobility and defense options to incentivize their game style. Shaun Rivera, Game Director at Project L, claimed that the nature of the game has changed over the last two years. Originally developed as a 1vs1 fighting game, the team made the pivot to a tag team, assist-based fighter. This change allows players to unlock their creativity and work in tandem with their champions.
Described as an easy-to-pick-up fighting game, free-to-play Project L emphasizes stylish visuals and fast-paced combat, requiring players to spend time mastering champions. Riot Games hasn’t revealed much about the game’s release date or development phase.
