Renee Montoya Actor Reprises Gotham Role for The CW

The CW’s Batwoman has cast its Renee Montoya and it is none other than Victoria Cartagena, the actor who played Montoya in Gotham on Fox.

This news comes by way of Deadline, which reports that Cartagena has been cast as a new series regular for the show. It’s important to note, however, that the two versions of Montoya aren’t connected, according to Deadline’s report — it just so happens that Cartagena played Montoya in Gotham and will now play her in Batwoman.

As you can see in Cartagena’s tweet above, the actress is quite excited to become Montoya again. According to Deadline, Montoya is “a former GCPD officer who left the force when she could no longer stomach the corruption inside the department.”

She instead now runs the “freaks division.” Deadline describes this Montoya as righteous, pragmatic, LGBTQ+, and a woman with a personal and mysterious mission to clean up Gotham. The report makes it clear that the casting is not a sign that the Gotham universe on Fox will crossover with The CW.

In the Season 2 finale of Batwoman, which aired on June 27, Javicia Leslie’s Ryan Wilder character finally took up the mantle of Batwoman after Kate Kate, played by Ruby Rose who is no longer a part of the show, decided to leave Gotham in search of her cousin, Bruce Wayne.

The finale also revealed that Wilder’s mother, whom she believed to have died during childbirth, is still alive.
