PS5 Surpasses 41.7 Million in Shipments
Sony has announced they have now surpassed 41.7 million in Playstation 5 shipments according to their latest financial report ending on June 30th, 2023. This fiscal year alone has raked in 19.1 million for PS5. Currently there are 108 million active users on the Playstation Network, which is up 5 million from the previous fiscal year.
The numbers are quite staggering, with the combined hardware of PS4 and PS5 now reaching 56.5 million units sold. First-party titles account for 6.6 million which has remained the same compared to last FY. Digital downloads took a 7 percent dive, representing 72 percent of software sales.
It was only in February of this year that Sony announced 32.1 million in shipments for the PS5 up to December 2022.
What’s also interesting is to see which first-party titles have reached new milestones. Gracing the top of the chart in terms of cumulative units sold, God of War (2018) remains victorious with 23 million as of January 2023. Another major IP is Horizon Zero Dawn (2017) with 20 million as of 2021, which has combined PS4 and PC sales. Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) has 13.2 million as of 2019.
Welcome to the Party
One of the major releases of this year Final Fantasy 16 released last month. It didn’t quite meet Square Enix’s expectations when it came to operating profit. The sales have been “strong” according to Square, passing the 3 million mark in just under a week of launch. The game remains a PS5 exclusive, although rumours of it coming to other platforms later on have been circling. Then there’s the second part of the series Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth which is expected in early 2024. The two-disc game is a big second act.
A sort of accidental console exclusive at least for now is the recently released of Baldur’s Gate 3. Having had complications for the Xbox Series X|S version, the title is coming to PS5 first on September 6th. While Larian Studios are working on the Xbox version, PS5 console seems will gain the CRPG first. If swinging from buildings is more your style, there’s also Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 coming in October.
While there are still major releases coming this year such as Atlas Fallen this month, Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Lords of the Fallen in October, these are coming to more than one platform.
