Hatsune Muki Project DIVA Mega Mix+ Review 1 (1)

Considering how many Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA games there have been over the last 13 years or so, it’s crazy to think that none have made their way to PC.

But now the wait is over thanks to Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix+. It’s not entirely new – it an enhanced port of Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix, released on Switch in 2019. But fans aren’t likely to see that as a negative when it packs in so much content and features.

While Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix launched with over 100 songs, this “plus” edition for PC also includes all those that were released as DLC as standard. That means it has over 170 songs as standard. Insane, right? And while that will set players back £34.39/$39.39, there’s also a VIP edition of the game available for £49.99/$59.99 that’s even more enticing.

Grab the VIP edition, however, and you get an additional 72 songs added into the mix, making for a grand total of 250 songs. You also get an item unlock key, but if you want any sense of progression in the game you’re better off not installing that. Doing so essentially unlocks every customisation item that otherwise have to be purchased by currency you earn in-game.

You can buy the DLC included in the VIP edition at a later date if you wish, of course, but you’ll miss out on a hefty discount. And chances are, if you’re going to get into Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix+, you’re going to want the extra songs. Just a word of warning to those who have never played a Hatsune Miku game before and are thinking about making this their jumping-in point: you’re not likely to recognise any of the songs here, and unless you have an affinity for J-pop, you may not like them.

For those that love J-pop, however, Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix+ is a real treat. Jump into rhythm mode and you can play each of the songs included at various difficulties, and tweak other settings, too. New to this Mega Mix+ edition is the option to change between the anime characters of the original game and their more shinier Future Tone counterparts.

Beyond the removal of the mode that required you to wave your Joy-Cons about, the gameplay remains the same in Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix+ though, for better or for worse. Notes fly in from all sides of the screen, and it’s up to you to press the correct buttons as they meet their ghostly counterparts. It’s a unique way of doing things, but it can also become a little overwhelming when things like double notes are brought into the mix. Often, you simply feel like you don’t have time to react.

Like in most music rhythm games, success comes from honing your skills, and learning the trickiest songs inside out. The latter isn’t ideal, but some will revel in the challenge. At its highest difficulty level, some of the songs in Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix+ will seem impossible to many.

The simple truth is, though, that you don’t need to be good at Hatsune Mike: Project DIVA Mega Mix+ to enjoy it. You can have fun simply listening to songs if you wish, while also watching their music videos. You can get even more of a kick out of this if you also customise the characters, changing their outfits or hairstyles. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but some will love it.

If you’re a Hatsune Miku fan that’s been deprived of the Project DIVA series over the years due to not having a console, you might want to consider Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix+ a must-have if your PC is up to the job. While the gameplay is starting to feel a little old now, the fact that there are over 170 songs to enjoy here is incredible. The VIP edition with its 250 songs is the way to go, though. This is the ultimate Hatsune Miku experience. And there’s even the possibility of more songs being added in the future.
