PlayStation Considering Cross-Game NFTs, New Patent Suggests

PlayStation’s parent company, Sony, filed a patent over a year ago, the title of which referenced using NFTs to transfer digital assets, and, just recently, the details of said patent have been made public, revealing exactly what type of NFT functionality PlayStation may be looking to implement.

The concept of NFTs and blockchain technology in video games has been widely discussed over the last few years, usually referring to the idea of making in-game digital assets NFTs in order to give them a unique identifier and often make them sellable outside the game.

The PlayStation patent, as transcribed by VGC, does reference this type of usage, purporting a technology that could allow players to transfer assets, “such as a character or weapon or other game asset,” to other players “across different games and platforms” via NFT. The patent mentions a player obtaining a unique skin NFT that could be used across multiple games. The patent confirms, of course, that these assets could be sold for real currency.

Another concept the patent mentions, which is a bit more novel, is the idea of using NFTs as a sort of savepoint or profile. For example, if an NFT is transferred to another player, they may be able to use it to continue a game exactly where it was left off by the first player, with “the same level, with the same score, and/or with the same points accumulation as the transferor.”

This technology could perhaps also have cross-game functionality, as the patent details the possibility of a player beating a boss in one game, and earning an NFT that allows them to use a specific type of weapon in a separate game; essentially, a system in which challenges can clear rewards across different games via NFT.

It is extremely commonplace for patents to be filed without anything actually coming from them, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens here with PlayStation. Though participating in the NFT marketplace can be financially lucrative, PlayStation has to judge whether it’s worth the backlash, as current gamer sentiment over NFTs is lower than ever. This can be seen in the response to Square Enix’s new NFT title, Symbiogenesis.
