PlayStation 5 Firmware 4.03 Has Been Jailbroken

YouTube content creator Lance McDonald shared a new tweet recently, showcasing that a group of hackers has managed to find an exploit in PlayStation 5 firmware 4.03 that allows them the jailbreak the console, though it doesn’t provide full access yet.

As reported by Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, a source close to Sony has confirmed to them that the jailbreak is legitimate. Also, the hackers have shared the jailbreak files publicly, but they have informed us that it only works on firmware 4.03 at the moment. The hackers claim that there is a possibility that the jailbreak work on a previous firmware, but it won’t work on any new firmware after 4.03 for now.

In case you don’t know, a jailbreak is access to the full software of a console illegally, including root access to codes and sections that are normally blocked to the customers. When someone other than the company gets this high-level access, it enables them to run paid games for free on the console and override the original rules of using a legal gaming console.

Currently, the jailbreak of firmware 4.03 on PlayStation 5 does allow hackers to gain read/write access for codes, however, it doesn’t allow them to execute codes, which is the main reason why this jailbreak is not a full console hack.

Also, as hackers claim, the jailbreak is unstable, and if someone attempts to run it, it only works 30% of the time, which means it is still a weak jailbreak. However, the fact that this jailbreak gives root access to the PlayStation 5 could be a serious warning for Sony engineers to work on the security gates of the console in further firmware.

Most PlayStation 5 consoles are currently running at firmware 22.02-06, which was released earlier in September 2022, bringing support for 1440p output devices and adding some other software improvements.

Sony has not officially reacted to this PS5 jailbreak yet, as there is the possibility that the company might have already fixed the software vulnerability in the firmware updates after 4.03. We strongly suggest you stay away from jailbreaking your console as Sony will ban your account and console for a lifetime if you gain illegal root access to the system software.
