Boom Radio have paid a touching tribute to Paul O’Grady after his partner Andre Portasio confirmed he had died “unexpectedly”. Paul was expected to start his new radio show on the station in just over a week’s time.

Boom Radio UK co-founder Phil Riley posted on Twitter: “There are few broadcasters who attract the love Paul did.

“The response to his last show was enormous – listeners felt he’d popped around to their house over lunch.

“That was his gift. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Boom Radio listeners were quick to pay their own tributes to Paul even though he had yet to start working on the station.

Mimi replied to the post: “Paul was so loved by many. Paul and Malcolm were my radio friends who were always welcome in my kitchen on a Sunday evening. RIP Paul.”

Nick Robinson added: “Such very sad news indeed, very sad, Paul and Malcom were my friends on the radio, we used to spend Sunday afternoons and Xmas lunch together, we were so lucky what a wonder kind, caring generous gentleman who will be so missed, such a talent RIP.”

“We were really looking forward to his Easter show with Malcolm. It is just heartbreaking that he has gone so soon,” Jo Gould shared.

Paul’s future co-host and friend Malcolm Prince also shared a few words on his death.

He posted on Twitter: “Yesterday afternoon, I popped round to Paul’s for a good old catch-up.

“Surrounded by his beloved dogs, he was laughing, smiling, and full of life.

“He was so proud of ‘Annie’, so happy to be back on Boom Radio, and he was looking forward to so many new projects.

“And now he’s gone. I can’t believe it. We have lost a unique talent – and I’ve lost a dear friend.

“We were all so lucky to have Paul in our lives. My heart goes out to Andrew, Paul’s family, and friends. Oh how I’ll miss him.”

Andre confirmed Paul’s death in a statement, which read: “It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening.

“We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss.

“He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion.

“I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years.”
