The nominees for the 95th Academy Awards were revealed on Tuesday morning with Allison Williams, who most recently starred in the horror hit M3GAN, and past Oscar nominee Riz Ahmed announcing the nominations.
It was a year of big firsts for veterans and up-and-comers alike receiving their first nominations with Brendan Fraser, Michelle Yeoh, Barry Keoghan, Bill Nighy, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ke Huy Quan all receiving nods this morning for the first time. Some pleasant surprises as well including Ana de Armas for the Marilyn Munroe biopic Blonde and Stephanie Hsu for Everything Everywhere All At Once, with the latter being left out a lot during award season.
Angela Bassett earned her second Oscar nomination, giving Marvel its first acting nod for her reprisal of the role of Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Atlanta and Eternals star Brian Tyree Henry, who had picked up local award nominations as well as an Independent Spirit Award nomination, but was left out of the more mainstream awards for his work in Causeway, received his first Oscar nom as well.
This is also the first year in Oscar history that four acting nominees are Asian-American, the most in its history.
Two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett received her eighth nomination for playing Lydia Tár, the titular character in Todd Fields’ film about a fallen-from-grace conductor. Legendary director Steven Spielberg earned his ninth director nomination with The Fablemans. He was also nominated last year for directing the West Side Story remake.
Some genre film nominations were to be expected with Matt Reeves’ The Batman taking three, including Best Sound and the mega-blockbuster Avatar: The Way of Water getting technical award nominations from Best Visual Effects to Production Design and even Best Picture, but James Cameron not nominated for Best Director.
