is expected to launch in March, bringing the company’s “flagship killer” experience to 2021. But if you own a

, which was released in late 2020, will the OnePlus 9 offer enough over it, warranting an upgrade? Or should you just stay with the 8T? Alternatively, if you’re planning to get the 8T, should you wait for the OnePlus 9 instead?

phones, in order to find out how they measure up to each other and whether you should “never settle” on the 8T, or it will hold up just fine to the OnePlus 9.

OnePlus 9 vs OnePlus 8T: prices and design

The OnePlus 9 is expected to be the cheaper out of the two, starting at $699 for the 128GB variant. The OnePlus 8T was released at about $50 more ($749), but with double the base storage – 256GB.

The OnePlus 9 would likely feature a Gorilla Glass-covered back and an aluminum frame, just like the OnePlus 8T.Based on OnePlus 9 leaks, both phones share a similar modern design, with curved edges, a rectangular camera module on the back, and about the same-sized holepunch selfie camera embedded into the top-left corner of their displays.

We’re yet to know what color variants the OnePlus 9 will be offered in, but the OnePlus 8T is available in two colors, each with a different finish. Those are Lunar Silver (matte) and Aquamarine Green (glossy).

OnePlus 9 vs OnePlus 8T: displays

So far, it would appear that the two phones will share the same 6.5-inch display size and exactly the same pixel resolution of 2400 x 1080. The OnePlus 8T’s display is a beautiful AMOLED one, offering superior contrast and colors to the average LCD phone screen, and it’s reasonable to expect that the OnePlus 9 too will use AMOLED.

Leakers have also suggested that both phones will share a 120Hz display refresh rate, meaning much smoother picture than on an average 60Hz phone screen.

OnePlus 9 vs OnePlus 8T: hardware and performance

The OnePlus 9 is expected to come with the Snapdragon 888 processor (which has a built-in 5G modem) and 8GB of RAM. The OnePlus 8T rocks the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 with 12GB RAM, and is also 5G ready.

The lesser RAM on the OnePlus 9 isn’t normally something most users would notice and should worry about. Technically, less RAM suggests that during usage less apps will be able to remain open in the background, with some restarting when the user switches back to them after a while.

Regardless, the OnePlus 9 will be a performance beast, similarly to the 8T. Users shouldn’t face performance-related issues, such as stutters, during both heavy gaming and general usage. We’ll be able to test this thoroughly once the OnePlus 9 comes out, but with the 8T we enjoyed an impressively fast and smooth performance.

OnePlus 9 vs OnePlus 8T: cameras

The OnePlus 9 is expected to come with a 48MP main camera, 48MP ultra-wide camera and an unknown third camera, possibly macro. Its selfie (front) camera will be a 16MP one.

The OnePlus 8T sports a 48MP main, 16MP ultra-wide and 5MP macro cameras, in addition to a fourth 2MP black and white sensor. On the front, its holepunch selfie camera is 16MP.

We’re yet to know how the OnePlus 9 will perform in terms of camera quality, but it should be on par or better than the 8T. For reference, we have OnePlus 8T camera samples below.

OnePlus 9 vs OnePlus 8T: battery life

The OnePlus 9 will pack a large 5,000 mAh battery. Its Snapdragon 888 processor is supposed to be more power-efficient than the one on the 8T, but we’re yet to see if that results in better battery life. Like the 8T, the 9 is expected to support an impressive 65W Warp charging. The OnePlus 9 is also rumored to have wireless charging support, although we’re yet to know how fast it would be.

During our OnePlus 8T review we were impressed with how solid its battery life performance was. The 8T has a smaller 4,500 mAh battery over the OnePlus 9, but it lasts through a day of use just fine. Thanks to its 65W charger, the 8T charges up in just about 30 minutes. No wireless charging support on it, though.
