One Piece Odyssey Starts Explaining Its Gameplay, New screenshots

The Japanese website of One Piece Odyssey was updated with new screenshots and details on the exploration, battle system, and characters, explaining the gameplay sequences seen in the reveal trailer.

One Piece Odyssey is the latest game adaptation of Eichiiro Oda’s famous mang, and this time we’re not being treated to a fighting game or a Musou game. We’re getting a traditional JRPG. One Piece Odyssey is being developed by Bandai Namco and ILCA, who recently developed Idolmaster Starlit Season, which is a pretty good visual novel/raising sim that really nails anime graphics.

Exploration and Turn-based Battles in One Piece Odyssey

One Piece Odyssey’s gameplay will be roughly separated into two parts, adventure, and battles, like in a traditional JRPG.

Exploration

During the exploration parts, players will control the Straw Hat Pirates, who each have their own unique actions. Using gameplay elements like Luffy’s rubber properties or Franky’s crafting skills will let you progress through the island and solve its mysteries. Zoro can cut through obstacles. Chopper can fit in small passages. Luffy can play spiderman, and Franky can build objects like bridges, as seen in the screenshots below.

Battle System

One Piece Odyssey mixes classic turn-based battle systems with One Piece’s peculiarities, and players will need to fully utilize the Straw Hat Pirates to grasp victory. Several keywords and elements of the battle system were introduced. Keep in mind the battle system’s mechanics’ names will probably be localized in a different way in the game’s English version.

Scramble Area Battle

Each character has a different attribute, and each of their skills has different ranges and properties. If you look at the screenshot above with Zorro, you can see that the currently selected skill, Onigiri, has a specific Attribute: Technic. Strongly hinting each skill has a different attribute and enemies will be strong or weak to certain attributes. If you take a look at the turn timeline at the left of the screen, you can also see Luffy has a red Attribute symbolized by a punch, while Nami and Ussop have a yellow attribute symbolized by a gun.

Dramatic Scene

Dramatic Scenes have a set triggering rate during battle. They can occur when you face a difficult situation and give you a big buff. For example, the screenshot below shows Nami is in danger because her HP is low, but in counterpart, a Dramatic scene triggered and she got a defense buff.

Kizuna Arts

If certain conditions are met during battle, you’ll be able to trigger Kizuna Arts, which are powerful combo attacks between the Straw Hats. The details do not elaborate on what these conditions are.

Overall, the battle system in One Piece Odyssey seems to be similar to the one found in the Kiseki/Trails series by Falcom. A turn-based system with different attributes, placement being important, and combo attacks between your party members.

Two New Original Characters Revealed

Very short profiles were revealed for two of the original characters appearing in the game, Lim and Adio. Adio was already seen in the reveal trailer, but Lim is brand new.

Lim

Lim lives on Wafrud island, the island the Straw Hats got stranded on in the game. She’s a mysterious girl who hates pirates.

Adio

Adio is an explorer who lives on Wafrud island. He also got stranded there like the Straw Hat Pirates.

That’s all the new details on One Piece Odyssey. Let me know your thoughts in the comments. The newest One Piece game will be launching in 2022 on PC via Steam, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
