Yesterday afternoon, Nintendo issued a statement on their official Twitter account informing players that the Nintendo Switch Sports servers had been taken down temporarily. The issue was reportedly related to a bug found in the version 1.2.1 update.

The official statement from Nintendo reads, “a bug has been found in the Nintendo Switch Sports Ver1.2.1 update which causes the software to close during the pre-match loading screen”. Nintendo went on to state that the issue was affecting both online and offline play, and as such, the rollout of the update was temporarily suspended.

In a follow-up tweet, Nintendo said, “While we investigate to find a solution, Nintendo Switch Sports servers will be temporarily taken offline and online play will not be available during this time”. It was also stated that save data backup was also suspended along with the game’s servers.#

The issue arose almost 24 hours ago, from the time of writing this article, and Nintendo is yet to release a follow-up statement surrounding the server downtime. Unfortunately, the version 1.2.1 update that was deployed wasn’t even a particularly interesting one. According to the official patch notes, the following changes were made in the latest update:

  • Data for available items was added.
  • Strengthened measures against disruptive behaviors.
  • Online play will be suspended for violations of Nintendo’s Community Guidelines including if we detect fraudulent behaviour such as save data manipulation.

Nintendo Switch Sports was released earlier this year, but Nintendo have promised that a future content update will be arriving this holiday season. Included in the update will be the addition of a new sport, golf. Alongside the new mode, the update is also set to include 21 courses from the original Wii Sports.

Although there’s plenty to look forward to in terms of Nintendo Switch Sports content, it’s advised that users don’t play whilst the issues continue to be investigated by Nintendo. As previously mentioned, not only are servers offline, save data backup has also been suspended for the time being. We strongly advise keeping your eyes on the official Nintendo of America Twitter account to keep up to date with all of the latest news surrounding the Nintendo Switch Sports server downtime.
