Nintendo Switch 2 announcement coming “this fiscal year”

We can finally stop speculating about a successor to the Nintendo Switch, as Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has confirmed “we will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year”.

In typical Nintendo fashion, this huge news was shared in a tweet with no fanfare. Earlier this morning (April 7), Furukawa tweeted “It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015”, and made the above statement that the successor to the console would be announced by the end of April 2024.

It has been over seven years since the Switch came out, and people have been hotly anticipating its successor ever since the OLED released back in 2021. However, it appears that the Switch 2 won’t launch with an OLED screen.

He continued, “We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.”

We could be waiting almost a year for Switch 2 news, so don’t hold your breath, but it’s good to have a clear information window. However, consoles and video games are often subject to delays, so while this is clearly the plan right now, plans can and do change. Alos, we have no idea how far out from launch the Switch 2 will be once it is officially announced.

Nintendo recently issued take downs to Garry’s Mod, meaning 20 years of material relating to the company and its properties has been removed. Nintendo has also taken down over 8,000 Github projects, with the site connecting devs with legal resources as a result.
