New Fire Emblem Engage Trailer Reveals Past Characters’ Abilities

In a recently uploaded trailer, Fire Emblem Engage shows off the combat bonuses players will be able to take advantage of when fusing, or “engaging,” with the spirits of past Fire Emblem games, also known as Emblems. The Emblems are the key selling point of this game, and as seen in a previous trailer, they appear to be central to its plot as well, so, of course, they also need to be just as relevant in gameplay.

The trailer reiterated the concept of Emblem rings; how each ring corresponds to a specific Emblem, and by equipping them to your characters, they get stat buffs, higher damage output, and special skills. But the most powerful perks come from “engaging” with your Emblems. Doing so grants access to special weapons, Engage skills, and Engage attacks, which are all specific to each particular Emblem character.

The trailer shows off six of the total twelve Emblem characters, revealing for the first time the full models of Corrin and Byleth, for which they decided on female and male respectively. The other four characters detailed here are Celica, Sigurd, Lyn, and obviously Marth. The remaining six Emblems are already known. Some of them were seen briefly in a previous trailer, but the characters themselves have been confirmed since Fire Emblem Engage was announced, due to the medieval-style painting shown at the beginning of its announcement trailer.

Sigurd’s Engage skill increases the amount of distance a unit can move. Celica’s lets you split your attack, halving the damage between two targets. Corrin’s Engage skill can remove obstructing hazards. Byleth’s skill boosts the stats of nearby allies. Lyn’s can prevent foes from counter-attacking, and finally, Marth’s, though it wasn’t shown, reads that it allows the character to perform an extra attack at 50% damage. They each also come with their own powerful Engage attack with dazzling animations that should be seen rather than read.

As the trailer explains, Engaging with your Emblem only lasts three turns, so players must effectively strategize and figure out when is the best moment to do so in battle. After the Engage runs out, your character will have a small meter under them, which recharges over time, so players will be able to Engage multiple times in one fight. This trailer further confirms that every character in your party can equip any ring in your possession, so the Engage combinations will be plentiful.
