Netflix’s Hit Man, The Strangers, and every movie new to streaming

0

Greetings, Polygon readers! Each week, we round up the most notable new releases to streaming and VOD, highlighting the biggest and best new movies for you to watch at home.

Kick off summer with two shark movies — one about a shark in Paris (un requin à Paris) and one about sharks circling a crashed airplane! There’s also Richard Linklater’s new romantic comedy, which stars Glen Powell as an undercover cop posing as a hitman who falls for a woman who hires him. And there’s The Strangers: Chapter 1, for anyone who wants to watch The Strangers, but slightly remixed.

Here’s everything new available to watch this weekend!

New on Netflix

Hit Man

Where to watch: Available to stream on Netflix

Image: Netflix

Genre: Romantic black comedy
Run time: 1h 55m
Director: Richard Linklater
Cast: Glen Powell, Adria Arjona, Retta

Glen Powell leads this romantic comedy/crime thriller about a police officer posing as a hitman. While he usually arrests the people who hire him, he ends up persuading a woman who hired him to take a different path, rather than killing her husband… which leads to them becoming romantically entangled. And it’s based on a true story!

From our impressions after seeing it at the New York Film Festival:

Hit Man is somewhere between a rom-com and a police caper, and every second is a breezy joy. The movie is built entirely around Powell’s endless charisma, charm, and comedic chops, and no one else in a 2023 movie has been this much fun to watch. It’s rare these days to get movies that are this completely built around a star, but Hit Man is a perfect reminder of just how great it is when we do.

I cannot speak more highly of Hirokazu Kore-eda’s (Shoplifters) Monster. It’s a beguiling thriller about a mother trying to figure out what is going on with her son, who has been acting up recently and got into a conflict at school with his teacher. Kore-eda is an incredibly deliberate filmmaker, with every detail deeply considered, and uses the film’s complicated narrative to unspool one of the best mysteries in years. It’s an absolute gem. —Pete Volk
