  • Price: $39.99
  • Platforms: Windows (Steam), Nintendo Switch

Combat is about to get a lot more exciting in Monster Hunter Rise’s upcoming expansion, Sunbreak. The DLC is planned to release worldwide on June 30, 2022.

Sunbreak promises to enhance the excellent gameplay of Monster Hunter Rise by introducing new locations, and monsters, among other things. More importantly, the expansion will introduce one new Switch Skill and one new Silkbind Attack per weapon type. This, along with the ability to set multiple Switch Skill loadouts, should make combat much more enjoyable and give players multiple options to deal with monsters on the fly.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at all the abilities teased so far!

Great Sword

The greatest of swords, the Great Sword is one of the slower, but heaviest hitting weapons in Monster Hunter.

Surge Slash Combo is the Great Sword’s newest Switch Skill in the Sunbreak expansion. This offensive move lets the Hunter deliver three consecutive massive overhead swings. Positioning is of utmost importance when using this skill as you will be somewhat locked in place. However, the upside is that it allows players to enter into different combo attacks seamlessly.

Great Sword

Great Sword users get the defensive Strongarm Stance as their shiny new Silkbind skill. This technique lets hunters use Ironsilk to harden their arms and weapon, making their grip much more steadfast. By using Strongarm Stance, Hunters can easily parry monster attacks with ease. Doing so opens up many opportunities to deal damage, heal up, or reposition themselves for more advantages.

Sword  & Shield

Our stalwart Sword & Shield adds more skills to do damage or to make enemies flinch more.

The Twin Blade Combo is simply a one-two punch attack that combines two sword strikes. Simple and effective, this skill is best used with weapons that deal elemental damage or status effects.

Sword and Shield

Destroyer Oil, on the other hand, is the newest Silkbind Skill that makes your Wirebugs coat your blade with a “special ointment”. This coating can then be triggered by friction done on your shield. More importantly, Destroyer Oil causes large monsters to stagger more frequently, allowing us to get more hits in.

Long Sword

The quick and ranged Long Sword’s new abilities make heavy use of the Spirit Gauge mechanic.

First is the Sacred Sheathe Combo, wherein the Hunter does exactly that – they slowly sheathe their massive blade. If the Hunter is able to successfully sheathe their weapon, they will be able to deliver massive damage to their enemies.

Long Sword

Harvest Moon is the new Silkbind skill. The Hunter designates a large circular area around him. Any counterattacks successfully performed within this circle will hit multiple times, instead of just once.

Hammer

Hunters who love bonking Large Monsters on the head and causing them to stagger will love the two new abilities of the Hammer.

First off is the Switch Skill Spinning Bludgeon: Charge. This attack causes the Hunter to rev up their Hammer up to three times to unleash three devastating Charged Attacks. If the hit lands, it will deal massive damage.

Hammer

Then we have Impact Burst, a self-buff Silkbind technique. This move coats the Hammer in Ironsilk, hardening it and causing Charged Attacks to create additional shockwaves. These shockwaves do small bits of damage, but are dizzying and can cause monsters to stagger more frequently.

Hunting Horn

Hunting Horn, the support player’s favorite choice in Monster Hunter Rise is bringing more ways to bring the pain.

The new Switch Skill Swing Combo lets the Hunter do two consecutive hits. They can choose whether to deliver hits from the right or from the left, allowing a helpful way to change directions shortly after.

Hunting Horn

Silkbind Shockwave is another Silkbind attack that coats the weapon in more Ironsilk. Similar to the Hammer, Silkbind Shockwave adds mini shockwaves to emanate from hits done by the Hunting Horn.

Lance

The defensive Lance weapon gets more abilities that allow thrusting or piercing hits.

Skyward Thrust is the more exciting of the new abilities. This launches the Hunter into the air using their Wirebug’s upward momentum. The Hunter then falls to the ground, Lance pointing downward, and skewers anything unfortunate enough to get caught in the impact zone.

Lance

Shield Tackle, on the other hand, allows the Hunter to charge forward with their shield raised up defensively. If the hit connects, they can follow up with a number of Lance thrusts for more damage.

Gunlance

Everyone’s favorite massive weapon that doubles as a firearm, the Gunlance, continues with its barrage of bullets in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak.

The Switch Skill Erupting Cannon launches a superheated shot toward an enemy. Due to the overwhelming amount of heat generated by this attack, the Gunlance remains hot for a period of time after firing the bullet. This adds additional damage to melee hits done by the Gunlance.

Gunlance

Bullet Barrage is our newest Silkbind Skill. As with most Silkbinds, this makes use of the Wirebug to propel the Hunter towards its prey. Upon hitting the target, Bullet Barrage unleashes a massive amount of shells. This is much like a large shotgun blast to the face.

Switch Axe

The dynamic Switch Axe is one of the best options if you want to have both heavy-hitting attacks and nimble slashes.

One of the more visually entertaining new Switch Skills is the 2-Staged Morph Slash Combo (that’s a mouthful!). This attack morphs the weapon twice while performing the combo. The Switch Axe converts to the Sword Mode first, then into the Axe Mode.

Switch Axe

Next up is the Elemental Burst Counter, the Switch Axe’s newest Silkbind attack. This move uses the Switch Gauge energy to unleash a devastating Elemental Burst.

Charge Blade

Charge Blades are getting new skills that utilize both Sword Mode and Axe Mode.

First up is Ready Stance, a defensive maneuver that binds the Sword and Axe with more Ironsilk and readies the hunter to fend off any attack.

Charge Blade

Next is Phial Follow-up: Firing Pin. This technique leaves elemental energy stuck in a monster that you are fighting. Elemental Energy builds up over the course of the fight and an explosion can be triggered by Axe Mode attacks.

Insect Glaive

The unique Insect Glaive is a curious weapon that makes use of various insects called Kinsects.

Our newest Switch Skill for the Insect Glaive is called Kinsect Slash. This attack can only be performed in mid-air so better leap or use a wirebug charge prior to using it. Kinsect Slash causes the hunter to push the Glaive and Kinsect forward, causing damage.

Insect Glaive

The Silkbind Attack is called the Awakened Kinsect Attack. Using this makes the hunter violently hurl a Kinsect towards your target and cause a large amount of initial damage. The Hunter will then follow this up with a Wirebug dash, creating even more opportunities for succeeding hits.

Bow

The nimble Bow is one of the three ranged weapons available in Monster Hunter Rise. Special arrows can be fired to inflict additional elemental damage or cause various status effects.

Butcher’s Bind is the Bow’s new Silkbind Attack. The Hunter nocks a special arrow coated in Ironsilk which they can then shoot at a target. If the next follow-up attack hits the same spot, the Ironsilk then causes major part damage in the area. This technique is extremely hard to pull off, but also very satisfying if done successfully as it can potentially cut off various monster parts.

Bow

Stake Thrust is the new Switch Skill. This melee hit embeds an explosive stake onto the enemy which can explode when hit by other attacks.

Heavy Bowgun

Lastly, we have the Heavy Bowgun. This massive and heavy ranged weapon continues its theme in the Sunbreak expansion.

Crouching Shot is the new Switch Skill that changes the Hunter’s firing stance. The Hunter gets down on one knee and aims down the sights to reduce recoil. As they become more focused, the Hunter gets to fire quicker. They also begin to fire faster and faster. However, be warned that doing so has the threat of causing the weapon to overheat, preventing it from performing more attacks.

Heavy Bowgun

Finally, we have the Silkbind Skill Setting Sun. The Hunter throws out a Wirebug that creates a circle of Ironsilk in from of them. Any multi-hit ammo that passes through this circle hits its target even more times.

What about the Dual Blades and Light Bowgun?

As of writing, Capcom has yet to reveal the Switch Skills or Silkbind attacks for these two weapons. Unfortunately, fans of the Dual Blade and Light Bowgun will need to wait a bit more!
