A new report from Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson suggests that the recently released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will receive a free-to-play weekend next month. An inside source with knowledge of Activision’s plans has reportedly revealed that the popular FPS title will kick off a free weekend from December 15th until December 19th.
Although the rumored free-to-play weekend has yet to be officially confirmed by either Activision or Infinity Ward, another rumor suggests that the title’s mid-season update will be launching on December 14th. It’s not uncommon for Activision to host free-to-play weekends for the latest Call of Duty title, and they do usually occur around the time of a big update, meaning if the mid-season update does launch on December 14th, a free-to-play weekend shortly after would make sense.
Insider Gaming has also reportedly been told that an update to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is scheduled for December 6th, but exactly what is included in the new patch was not confirmed. Despite the fact that Black Ops Cold War isn’t the latest Call of Duty title, Treyarch has continued to provide new content for those still playing the title. Earlier this year a remake of the popular Jungle map debuted in-game, along with a brand new weapon. But we don’t recommend fans get their hopes up about the upcoming update, as details have yet to be confirmed by Treyarch Studios.
Modern Warfare 2’s season one update debuted last week, alongside the launch of Warzone 2.0 and the highly anticipated DMZ mode. Even if you’re yet to pick up a copy of Modern Warfare 2, Warzone 2.0, similar to its predecessor, is completely free-to-play and available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Activision recently confirmed that Warzone 2.0 had surpassed over 25 million players within the first 5 days of launch, but whether or not the sequel could de-throne the original Warzone’s record of 30 million players within 10 days, has yet to be confirmed.
