Back in 2020 we got wind of Mike Morhaime’s return to the games industry after leaving Blizzard thanks to the formation of Dreamhaven, a new company with two internal studios made up of multiple ex-Blizzard developers. At the time, there was no information about what the company was putting together, and four years later there’s still no such information, but this week, the company has invited gamers to sign up to playtest.
The registration in question is for the company’s upcoming games — yes, plural — and requires the completion of a small survey that asks for a date of birth to start, then asks for an email, region location, and general details about the types of games players enjoy and what platforms they play on. An associated blog post explains that interested gamers should note these playtests will be for some very early versions of games, but otherwise it doesn’t provide more details.
As we noted, Morhaime has been extremely quiet following his retirement as president of Blizzard in 2018; in 2021, as sexual harassment and discrimination lawsuits against Activision-Blizzard got underway, he issued an open apology for what he characterized as his own failure to support Blizzard women during years of toxic culture at the studio. Most recently, Lightforge Games, one of the studios that was in partnership with Dreamhaven, has since folded inward, cancelling its developing social RPG and reducing staff to a skeleton crew.
