Some of the highlights in Metroid Prime Remastered are when you find a secret, defeat a boss, or narrowly escape death from an ambushing pack of creatures. Each of these experiences is enhanced by the fun and engaging upgrades to Samus’ suit that you collect throughout the journey.

Upgrading your arsenal and movement options is the main way you engage with the world in Metroid Prime. Enhancing Samus’ suit can unlock new locations while collecting new combat mechanics can make clearing those areas more entertaining. These are the upgrades that will have the biggest impact on your experience in Tallon IV.

10 Energy Tanks

In order to enjoy any of the upgrades in Metroid Prime Remastered, you first need to stay alive. Throughout Tallon IV you’ll come across several football-sized canisters containing a hazy purple element inside. Collecting one of these Energy Tanks will increase your maximum shield capacity by 100.

There are 14 Energy Tanks in all, hidden all over the planet of Tallon IV. These items are optional upgrades (not required to progress the story), hidden behind false walls or in hard-to-reach areas. Collect as many as you can, as they will make your time in Metroid Prime Remastered a lot smoother.

9 Morph Ball

Metroid Prime Morph Ball

Until you unlock the Morph Ball, you’re stuck walking around on your own two feet. Once you have access to transform, the Morph Ball lets you roll around with additional speed and agility. It’s so fun to move around in the ball that it can be tempting to use it as your default movement method.

The Morph Ball not only feels great, but it also unlocks shortcuts when backtracking. As you double-back and revisit areas to uncover new secrets, the Morph Ball makes those treks more enjoyable and streamlined.

8 Charge Beam

Charging up your beam attack is a great way to unleash fury on your enemies. By holding down ZL / A, Samus will fire a volley of attacks and then charge up her Arm Cannon. Releasing the fire button will then unleash an empowered attack.

Holding a Charge Beam will also activate a limited tractor beam, drawing in small objects like shield boosts and missile ammunition. Charge Beam works with any equipped Arm Cannon mode and also improves the Missile Launcher with unlockable Combos (more on that later in this list).

7 Boost Ball

Once you’ve gotten used to moving around the map with the Morph Ball, unlocking the Boost Ball will be a welcomed upgrade. With the Boost Ball unlocked, pressing and holding L / B while in the Morph Ball will trigger a short boost of speed.

The Boost Ball makes traversal more fun, moving around the map with even more speed and dodging enemy attacks with ease. The upgrade also unlocks the half-pipes that have been constructed around Tallon IV. By performing well-timed boosts, you can climb up a half-pipe and reach new heights.

6 Wave Beam

Metroid Prime Wave Beam

The Wave Beam is the first new Arm Cannon firing mode that you will add to Samus’ arsenal. Unleashing powerful electric bolts, the Wave Beam alters the firing capability of your Arm Cannon with more powerful projectiles, but with a slower fire rate.

When locking on to an enemy with ZL, the Wave Beam will fire homing attacks. These attacks follow their target to an extent, making your shots hit more frequently. When combined with the Charge Beam, a charged Wave Beam attack will release a strong electric blast, briefly enveloping foes in electrical energy.

5 Super Missile

As you progress through the story you will begin to collect Beam Combos. The first Charge Beam + Missile combo you will unlock is the Super Missile, a single-shot attack costing 5 missiles. With the Power Beam equipped, hold down ZR / A until the Arm Cannon is charged then press R.

The Super Missile is great at clearing tight corridors as it fires an intense blast in a straight line. This Beam Combo attack is also used to destroy Cordite, a rare material that you will need to clear at a certain point.

4 Spider Ball

From early on in the game, you’ll start seeing a metallic track that runs along the ceiling of some rooms. The track is morph ball sized and looks important to navigating the rooms, but isn’t usable for the uninitiated.

Once you unlock the Spider Ball, these tracks become accessible. By attaching to a magnetic rail track, Samus in the Morph Ball can roll up the walls and even travel on the ceiling. There may even be a puzzle room designed all around this upgrade worth checking out.

3 Ice Beam

If you can’t kill an enemy in a single shot, being able to disable them is highly beneficial. Disabled enemies can’t deal damage or avoid your attacks, making them far easier to manage. Particularly when facing a group of creatures, using the Ice Beam can be the best tactic.

With its ability to freeze certain enemies, the Ice Beam turns Samus’ Arm Cannon into a frozen terror. When combined with the Charge Beam, an Ice Beam blast can be the best solution to many of the problems in Tallon IV.

2 Grapple Beam

Metroid Prime Grapple Beam

Throughout the world in Metroid Prime Remastered, there are Grapple Points in many of the rooms that look so inviting to swing on. Unfortunately, you need to wait until you get far enough into the story to obtain the Grapple Beam before you can have any fun with them.

Once you unlock the Grapple Beam, Grapple Points become highlighted with a new icon showing your ability to connect to them. By pressing ZL when looking at a Grapple Point, you can shoot the Grapple Beam and swing across like Indiana Jones on his whip.

1 Space Jump Boots

Metroid Prime Space Jump Boots

While adventuring through space and alien planets, Samus wears powerful Suits that provide life support services. Although these Suits provide life-saving functionality and even shield Samus from attacks, they don’t allow her to jump very high. That is until you unlock the Space Jump Boots.

By engaging boot-mounted thrusters, the Space Jump Boots increase the leaping capability of Samus’ Suits. This upgrade allows you to double jump, increasing your movement options once you leave the ground. New platforms will then be within reach and moving around on foot will finally become bearable.
