Along the way, you’ll pick up squad members that will help you in your never-ending fight to save the galaxy. These individuals prove their worth as they’re all useful in their own way whether that’d be through their skills or combat stats. As true as that may be, these squad members should be your #1 priority when assembling your team.

6/6 Ashley Williams

Mass Effect 1 Ashley Williams

Ashley Williams is one of the very first members that will join your team. She specializes in combat and can really put in work going in on the offensive. She’s pretty much considered to be an all-around character as she’s able to specialize in every weapon type. There’s a lot of freedom when leveling her up as her skill points can pretty much go anywhere.

The thing about Ashley being proficient in every category is that you’re pretty much going to want to focus on only two or three areas to level up. Doing so allows you to make her stronger in certain areas and focus on the rest later.

5/6 Kaidan Alenko

Mass Effect 1 Kaidan Alenko

Every squad can’t function without having someone cover healing, and that’s where Kaidan Alenko comes in handy. Kaidan has a Sentinel talent which gives him abilities such as Stasis and Throw which can make him effective in suppressing enemies. However, compared to a certain someone on this list, he just doesn’t compare to them in terms of stats and power.

However, Kaidan is an amazing medic to have as his medic talent gives him some advantages. His First-Aid ability has a shorter cooldown than others, and he can also deploy medi-gel during combat making sure that you stay in the fight.

4/6 Urdnot Wrex

Mass Effect 1 Urdnot Wrex

There are going to be moments in fights where you feel as though the gunfire is never-ending. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed, but it doesn’t have to be this way. With Urdnot Wrex on your crew, you don’t have to worry about that. Wrex is designed to be a bullet sponge while you finish enemies off. He specializes in close combat which makes him an absolute beast.

You will notice the damage that he can cause in battle as you see him shotgunning and throwing enemies around the battlefield with ease. The only downside to him is that when he gets low on health it’s up to you or another member of the squad to heal him up. You can’t let the tank die.

3/6 Tali’Zorah nar Rayya

Mass Effect 1 Tali'Zorah nar Rayya

Tali’Zorah nar Rayya is someone who specializes in her tech to vanquish her enemies, and you should take advantage of that. With her skills such as Overload and Damping, she can weaken her enemies while also damaging them. What makes Tali so useful is that because of her tech abilities, she’s also able to use her abilities with almost no cooldown at all.

While Tali has light protections she does possess skills like Barrier that give her some on top of the shield she already has. If you want to give your foes a run for their money, especially the Geth, you need Tali on your side.

2/6 Garrus Vakarian

Mass Effect 1 Garrus Vakarian

Even though he’s not at the very center of fights like Wrex, Garrus Vakarian can do superior amounts of damage using his trusty sniper rifle. Garrus is what you would get if you take the damage output that Wrex can cause along with Tali’s tech abilities. This is what makes him higher on this list. He’s able to pick enemies off from a distance while keeping himself out of gunfire.

The only downside to Garrus is that he can go down pretty easily if he takes one too many hits. Keeping in the very back of the squad is your best bet of survival if you all want to make it out alive.

1/6 Liara T’Soni

Mass Effect 1 Liara T'Soni

The best squad member that you can have in Mass Effect 1 is definitely Liara T’Soni. While you don’t receive Liara until Chapter 2, you can guarantee that she’s worth the wait. She doesn’t specialize in using any weapons, but the thing is she doesn’t need them to deal massive amounts of damage. Her Singularity talent allows her to take enemies out with ease, and she barely has any cooldown.

She’s a master at electronics affecting the enemy’s defense, she can heal other squad members, and her biotic powers are no match for foes. She does have light defense, so you need to keep an eye on her health, but if you do just that, everything should turn out for the better.
