While the second half of the year has some fairly big games on the schedule, it’s easy to picture Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 as being the most anticipated, possibly alongside Starfield.
With the 2018 game, Insomniac struck true gold, delivering at the same time the best Spider-Man game and one of the best superhero titles ever made. It was rewarded with critical praise and incredible sales, making it one of the most successful games released on PlayStation 4.
Combined with Miles Morales (released as a PlayStation 5 launch title, though also available on PS4), the Marvel’s Spider-Man series had sold over 33 million units a year ago. That was before both games were released on PC in late 2022, where they have sold a fair amount, too.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was announced during the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase. The trailer showed Peter Parker and Miles Morales teaming up against a new threat – Venom.
Since then, fans have been speculating whether there would be a co-op feature in the sequel, but Insomniac never called the game anything other than single player.
However, Miles Morales voice actor Nadji Jeter seems to have teased a co-op mode at a SacAnime panel. At 5:00, someone from the audience asks whether Marvel’s Spider-Man would support co-op, to which Jeter replies:
I believe it has been….I think it has been announced. I don’t know if it’s been announced or not, but I think so.
The actor also teases that symbiotes will be ‘everywhere’ in this sequel. Later in the video clip, he talks about Miles getting clever with his webs in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
We were like, ‘Okay, what can we do to gradually show the progression of him?’ and that was the swinging and the flipping in the air, you know, his acrobatics. But yeah, we got a lot more funny stuff because he gets clever with his webs in this next one. He gets real clever, so y’all stick around for Part 2 because y’all gonna be like ‘What?’ He’s getting the hang of it now.
Regarding the co-op mode, it’s possible Jeter (who also played Sam in The Last of Us) misspoke, but there’s a solid chance he simply slipped an announcement that was meant for later.
After all, actors do that all the time. Just this weekend, we learned of Remedy’s Alan Wake 2 launch target thanks to the protagonist’s voice actor. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 also had something similar when one of the writers ‘leaked’ the Fall 2023 release window.
The game is likely to be the main focus of the next PlayStation Showcase, due to be broadcasted in two days. If there’s a co-op mode to be announced, that would be a perfect time.
