Marvel’s Shang-Chi Series Gets Exciting Update As Fans Await A Sequel

Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was released in 2021 and made more than $400 million at the box office, but there has been no word yet on a sequel or if any characters from the film could cross over into other Marvel projects. Shang-Chi star Simu Liu has now provided an exciting update for people who want to see more of the series.

Posting on Threads, Liu responded to someone who expressed their dismay with Marvel’s lack of output for Shang-Chi following the movie’s release years ago. This person said it’s frustrating that Marvel hasn’t announced a sequel or discussed the possibility of Shang-Chi showing up in other Marvel films. Liu himself responded, saying, “I proooomise it’s happening.”

This statement doesn’t specify if he’s talking about a Shang-Chi sequel or some other extension of the series and character, but it’s an exciting update in any event for fans of the series.

Prior to Shang-Chi’s release, former Disney CEO Bob Chapek said the film was an “interesting experiment” as it relates to its release model because it was launching in theaters exclusively instead of debuting simultaneously on Disney+ as some of Disney’s other films did during the pandemic. Liu took exception to Chapek using the “experiment” verbiage, and Marvel’s Kevin Feige later weighed in on what he called a “misunderstanding.”

Shang-Chi released theatrically in September 2021 and made $75 million for its opening weekend and went on to bank $432 million worldwide during its run. It’s now streaming on Disney+, alongside Marvel’s extensive catalog of other films.

In addition to Liu, Shang-Chi starred Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Ben Kingsley, and Tony Leung Chiu-wai. The film was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. He’s lined up to direct the upcoming Naruto film, and many are hoping he would come back for Shang-Chi 2, if it happens.
