Marvel MMORPG from DC Universe Devs Has Been Cancelled

Toward the end of last year, a Marvel-based MMORPG was revealed, being developed by DC Universe Online developer Daybreak Games. However, it has been announced by parent company Enad Global 7 (EG7) in a blog post that the Marvel game will no longer be worked on.

The company released a short statement explaining due to the “re-evaluation of the development risk profile” they will no longer be moving forward with the game and will prioritise focusing on “alternative long-term projects.”

EG7 put out a statement confirming the cancellation and refocusing on other multiple projects

Originally the investment planned was for over 500 million SEK or around $50 million USD to go into the project over the next few years, however, these funds will now be allocated to other multiple projects. This includes upgrades for The Lord of Rings Online and DC Universe Online. The focus will also be put on its “first-party, original IPs”.

It looks like after reassessing the major MMORPG that the investment was not worth the risk. Developing a new title can require a lot of time and resources, and developing smaller or existing titles seems to be their route now.

Previously it was announced the Marvel MMORPG would be under Dimensional Ink Studios, led by CEO Jack Emmert who has worked on DCUO. It was also shared The Lord of Rings Online would be gaining a “major revamp to upgrade the visuals…”

This isn’t the first time the studio has worked on a Marvel MMO. In 2018 it was also announced a Marvel MMO was cancelled. Not much else was revealed about the game, just that it would be a AAA title. A Marvel MMO project just doesn’t seem to be getting much luck with staying greenlit.

This isn’t the only Marvel title to be currently in development. Firaxis’ card-driven turn-based RPG Marvel’s Midnight Sun is being developed, with a rumour it may get a launch soon.
