For those that didn’t move to Mario Kart 8, a new update is now available to download.

A new and rather unexpected update for Mario Kart 7 was released by Nintendo yesterday, the first update to the game in over ten years.

According to the official patch notes released by Nintendo, the version 1.2 update addresses several issues in order to improve the overall gameplay experience. Unfortunately, that’s quite literally all that’s detailed in the patch notes. Despite this being the first update in well over ten years, it doesn’t appear to include anything other than a few gameplay fixes.

Prior to the release of the version 1.2 update earlier this week, Mario Kart 7’s last update was back in May of 2012 and included the following changes:

  • An update has been made available to eliminate shortcut exploits in the Wuhu Loop, Maka Wuhu, and Bowser Castle 1 tracks when they are played in the Online Multiplayer Mode.
  • The update is required to play the game’s Online Multiplayer Modes. However, the tracks in Single-Player and Local Multiplayer Modes will not be affected by this update. Players can continue to play in these modes without installing the update.

Version 1.1 and 1.2 appear to be the only two updates ever released for Mario Kart 7, according to the game’s update history.

If, like many other Mario Kart enthusiasts, you’re playing the latest instalment in the series, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, new content is still being released frequently despite the fact that the title is now five years old. Earlier this year, Nintendo announced the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Pass, which would see a plethora of returning tracks hit Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in six different waves.

Each wave of the pass would include eight courses split across two cups, totalling to 48 tracks included in the Booster Pass, all of which will be available by the time the sixth wave releases by the end of 2023. The most recent wave was released late last month, bringing with it tracks such as Maple Treeway, Tour London Loop, Merry Mountain, and more.
