Mappa studio CEO Manabu Otsuka has expressed interest in adapting other works by Chainsaw Man author Tatsuki Fujimoto.

At the recent Crunchyroll Expo in San Jose, California, IGN France sat down with Mappa studio representatives. Questions were pitched to Otsuka and executive producer Makoto Kimura. During the interview, Otsuka shared that he’s considering adapting more of Fujimoto’s works, including one-shot pieces.

Studio Mappa is known for working on many popular anime shows such as Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Yuri on Ice. With Mappa’s latest project, the studio is undertaking a new challenge by completely handling the internal development of the upcoming anime Chainsaw Man. Mappa is doing everything in-house, from production to marketing to merchandising, which can be a risky business decision. Studio Mappa believes strongly in Fujimoto’s work.

Otsuka shared that Chainsaw Man director Ryu Nakayama and his team are taking a realistic approach to the creation of the anime. Through the study and analysis of the manga, including character interactions and the visual depiction of sound, Studio Mappa is hoping to adapt Chainsaw Man faithfully. This level of detail will extend to unexpected places like the anime’s opening, for example.

Otsuka shared that he has read each piece of Fujimoto’s work in addition to Chainsaw Man. He definitely wants to adapt the second part of the manga which is currently ongoing in Shounen Jump, but he’s also thinking ahead. Otsuka wants to animate more of Fujimoto’s work, such as one-shots Look Back and Goodbye, Eri. Fujimoto’s one-shots may be ripe for adaptation as they reflect more strongly the author’s passion for cinema.

Tatsuki Fujimoto is best-known for his works Fire Punch and Chainsaw Man. However, as Otsuka was speaking about, Fujimoto has also published a lot of one-shots. These were compiled recently into a two-volume anthology titled: Fujimoto Tatsuki Tanpenshū or Tatsuki Fujimoto Before Chainsaw Man. His other popular one-shots: Look Back, Good Bye, Eri and Just Listen to This Song are currently available to read on Shounen Jump’s Manga Plus service.
