Kinema Citrus released the first season of Made in Abyss in September 2017. The adventure-focused anime was well-received by the community for its exciting premise, artwork, and music. Now, after a frustratingly long wait, the anime series is coming back with its much-awaited Season 2.

Based on a manga series by Akihito Tsukushi, Made in Abyss follows the journey of Riko, who is on a mission to find her mother, Lyza. Riko wants to follow in her mother’s footsteps and gain the title of “White Whistle,” the legendary cave riders who descend into the lower regions of Abyss. In this fictional world, Abyss is a giant hole on Earth’s surface that holds mysterious relics and artifacts of a civilization that has gone extinct.

Made in Abyss has an intriguing and unique story, so it’s no wonder the manga was nominated for the 11th Manga Taisho awards. Kinema Citrus also did a remarkable job with the anime adaptation by staying faithful to the original material. After the first season’s success, the production house released three Made in Abyss films, two of which served as a recap of the first season. The third film, however, is set right after the events of Season 1, so it’s best to watch it before you jump on to the upcoming season.
