LOTR: Gollum Is Getting A Patch To Address Performance Issues

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, a game that launched to poor critical reception, will receive a patch on May 27. The update will supposedly address performance issues that have plagued the game since its release earlier this week.

This comes by way of developer Daedalic, which issued a statement to Eurogamer about the game’s current state. “As you maybe already can imagine, we are aware of the feedback brought up by preview-testers,” an excerpt from the statement reads.

Daedalic issued a day-one patch alongside the game’s release, which addressed crashing issues on PS5, but there’s still work to be done. “Most of the issues mentioned, especially crashes, were concerning the console version of the game and we already patched the game accordingly,” Daedalic said.

The company confirmed that it’s “closely monitoring the launch period,” and is open to feedback from the community. “More details will be shared tomorrow once we have compiled all the information.” It’s unclear the extent of the upcoming patch, or when exactly it will go live.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is the worst-reviewed game of 2023, so far according to GameSpot’s sister site Metacritic. Of the 298 games available on the site for 2023, the PS5 version of Gollum is last on the list (as spotted by VGC).

“Much like Gollum’s quest for the One Ring, my quest to complete The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was full of endless setbacks, impossible odds, and ever-increasing levels of madness. And, like Gollum, my journey was doomed from the start. So if the developers’ main goal was to really put you in the shoes of such a pitiful, unloveable character faced with constant pain and suffering at every turn, they were at least successful at that,” said Sam Pape in GameSpot’s The Lord of the Rings: Gollum review.
