After speaking with her guest Lucy Cave about Paul O’Grady, Lorraine played a clip from when the TV presenter was last on her ITV show. Lorraine got teary-eyed as she remembered Paul and his love for dogs. In the clip, she spoke with the Lily Savage star about trying not to adopt more animals.
When speaking with guest Lucy, Lorraine said: “It has been a real shock.”
Lucy nodded in agreement as she explained: “I mean the tributes have been pouring in as you said and his husband announced the news that he’s gonna be greatly missed by his loved ones, his friends, his family and of course, his animals as well.
“He left BBC Radio 2 recently after 14 years and was actually due to start a new show on Boom Radio in just a couple of weeks’ time on Easter Sunday.
“You know he’d been full of the spirit of life, he’d been on stage as Miss Hannigan in Annie recently on stage four days ago, and was due to go back on stage on the 24th of April so it’s come as a real shock.

“It’s so sad because like you said, he’s such a legend and such an iconic TV.”
“And the kindest man,” Lorraine chipped in. “The funniest man and from way back we remember him as Lily Savage of course, absolutely groundbreaking.”
Lucy continued: “Yeah, Lily Savage was a true trailblazer and actually before Lily Savage, he was Rozanne in The Bill. I think that sort of paved the way for him as Lily Savage.”
The ITV host proceeded to share a clip from when Paul last appeared on her show.
“It would have been just before Christmas last year, in October,” Lorraine said.
“He actually talked about the fact that he did this show… he loved doing the show from Battersea, but there was only one thing, he couldn’t stop adopting the dogs.”
During the clip, Lorraine said to Paul: “In your contract, it says you’re not allowed to adopt any more for your own good.”
“Try and stop me,” Paul replied. “I mean really try and stop me. I am going in after the show because there are so many puppies and so many older dogs because people can’t afford to look after them.”
“Paul was so good at getting that message across,” Lorraine said afterwards before she spoke to Peter who worked with Paul at Battersea.
Paul’s partner Andre Portasio confirmed the news of the comedian’s death in a statement.
He said: “It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening.
“He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion.”
Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
