Lollipop Chainsaw is revving up for 2023 remake – Destructoid

So long, suckers

Following last month’s surprisingly under-the-radar teaser, Dragami Games has confirmed that it is currently working on a remake of the hyper-silly, hyper-violent hack ‘n’ slash hit Lollipop Chainsaw. The remake is scheduled to launch next year, though specific platforms are yet to be revealed.

Speaking in an article on Japanese website Automaton, Dragami Games’ CEO Yoshimi Yasuda spoke of not his own fondness for the series, but his awareness of its dedicated cult following. As such, Yasuda thought it was apt to revisit the 2012 release for its tenth anniversary (which is this year, strictly speaking). For such a niche release, it appears that Dragami has faced a considerable amount of red tape in bringing the project to fruition.

“It has been some time since players have not been able to access the game on current consoles. We, the original development staff on Lollipop Chainsaw, think of the game as very precious to us, and did not want to leave it in limbo, where players who want to play it cannot,” notes Yasuda. “As such, we purchased the Lollipop Chainsaw intellectual property from Kadokawa Games and decided to develop a remake. We have already contacted Warner Bros. about development and are being supported by them in this endeavor.”

Yasuda notes that many of the original game’s development team will be returning to work on the remake, which is expected to have a somewhat more “realistic” aesthetic due to the nature of modern gaming hardware. It is also lamented that, unfortunately, much of the original release’s soundtrack will be omitted for licensing reasons, so players so expect a brand new score “aside from a few licensed tracks.”

Lollipop Chainsaw is currently in development at Dragami Games. It is scheduled to launch in 2023.
