Players looking for a bright and colorful adventure need not look too far as Playtonic Friends, the publishing label born out of Playtonic, has announced that the MegaWobble-developed Lil Gator Game will release on December 14th for Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam.

The cutesy platformer was announced last year but it’s only today that we finally learned when we’ll be able to get our hands all over it, and thankfully, it’s not too far away. In fact, coming in just before Christmas, it might make for a decent little digital stocking filler for those with wrapped-up Nintendo Switch consoles sitting under trees for the next four weeks.

But what’s it all about? What is Lil Gator Game? The release date announcement trailer that Playtonic Friends put out today gives us a quick look at what Lil Gator can do, and what he can do is plenty. He can run around, jump about, throw sticks and stones, and even glide from atop the highest peaks, a little like Link in Breath of the Wild.

It’s an open-world adventure game that’s suitable for all the family. While there is some form of combat – throwing sticks and stones is known to break bones, after all – it’s innocent enough and a far cry from, well, Far Cry, as the baddies are all made out of cardboard. Players will take Lil Gator around a massive island to help out the friends he meets along the way. Each area of the island houses different characters, all of whom could use a helping hand. You’ll take on quests from characters you meet around the game’s bright and colorful game world, as well as collect arts and crafts supplies. These collectibles can be used to customize Lil Gator and even craft new abilities to help you explore the island in its entirety.

Lil Gator Game will release on December 14th as a digital download on the Nintendo Switch eShop and the Steam storefront. Sadly, there’s no physical release for this one, though there is a nifty 30% pre-purchase discount off of the listed $19.99/£16.75/19.50€ store prices. Pre-orders begin December 1st in the UK and Europe, and December 5th in North America, so be sure to lock-in your pre-order for the best price ahead of release. You can add the game to your wishlist via Steam and the eShop from today.
