LEGO Fortnite players agree that building is frustrating and the weakest part of the game

Though LEGO Fortnite is fun and deserves the high praise it is getting so far, there’s a major flaw with the game and it’s the building, which is extremely ironic considering Fortnite and LEGO are all about building. Here are the community and my thoughts on building in LEGO Fortnite.

Is LEGO Fortnite building bad?

In its current state, the building in LEGO Fortnite isn’t good. And there are several reasons for this. First, you can’t level the ground. Second, the shapes of the building blocks don’t fit well together. Third, you can’t edit anything, so if you place something incorrectly, break out your Pickaxe.

Uneven ground

Let’s start with the first issue: uneven ground. With no way to level the ground, you’ll start building your dream LEGO house and realize that part of the floor is forced up which makes putting all the pieces together impossible.. An easy fix would be to allow us to sink and raise the blocks we are placing, but so far the building mechanics in LEGO Fortnite only work on a 2D plane.

Blocks not fitting together well

One of the fundamentally flawed aspects of LEGO Fortnite is the building blocks you get don’t fit well together. I’ve seen so many Reddit posts about people making houses from scratch and getting to the end and the pieces don’t fit together. In Minecraft, everything is one by one. In LEGO Fortnite, most of the cool-looking blocks aren’t one by one which makes them extremely hard to work with.

No way to edit

Fourth, we desperately need a way to edit our builds. The build mode currently doesn’t have any way to move or delete blocks, so you’re forced to waste resources by breaking the block if you place it and it’s not in the exact right spot. An edit mode paired with the build mode seems essential to a survival crafting game, but LEGO Fortnite launched without it.

On Reddit, I’ve seen many people who have joined me in giving up building in LEGO Fortnite for now until Epic Games makes it better. User swifto12 reported that “building is frustrating” when he tried to make a house and found out the walls don’t connect together easily. Many of the comments on the post agree that building is “a bit of a mess” and that the only hope is for more to be coming soon.

The sad thing about building in LEGO Fortnite is most of the complaints we have are fundamental to the experience. In other words, implementing the changes we need will take a lot of redesigning from the ground up which Epic Games most likely won’t do. Though I’m still hoping for updates to building, by and large, we’re stuck with how it is.
