Konami has announced via a Steam update that the social deception game Crimesight will be unplayable beginning in May.
Crimesight was released in April 2022 and was met with mostly positive reviews. Taking the social deduction aspects of Among Us and blending it with a crime thriller, Crimesight tasked two teams with working towards opposing goals. Sherlock’s team gathers clues to prevent a murder, while Moriarty’s team tries to throw off the investigators so they can commit the murder.
The news broke after Konami updated the title on the night of January 30. The update reads, “Thank you for playing CRIMESIGHT. This service has continued to operate with the support of many users since its launch in April 2022, but due to various circumstances, we have decided to terminate the service on Monday, May 01, 2023 at 00:00 PDT”.
While online support being pulled is nothing new for games, this announcement came as a surprise, as Konami had made no mention prior to the update that the game’s online services were up for debate. But the online component isn’t the only aspect of the game being affected. The entire title will be unplayable, even though there are offline options. This means the game will be lost media as of May 1, which the community has not taken lightly. At the time of this reporting, the Recent Reviews on Steam sit at a “Mostly Negative,” with the new reviews warning potential buyers that the title is on the way to shutting down.
While the announcement was a surprise, player count most likely affected this decision. The game had strong reviews and a dedicated base on Steam, but there seemingly weren’t enough players for Konami to keep investing in the game’s services. Positive Steam reviews prior to the update note that there were lengthy wait times in lobbies, as there didn’t seem to be enough players for a match. What still seems questionable is why Konami is disabling the offline feature as well.
