Kirby and Pokemon both win big in Nintendo FY21 financials

Nintendo have released their latest financials. Most numbers dropped year-on-year versus the Animal Crossing boom of 2021, but only by the single digit percentages. There are 107.65 million Switches out there (I’m looking at mine on my desk right now), and the Pokemon games did rather well. Pleasing everyone, Nintendo also shared a glimpse at their upcoming titles, promising that Bayonetta 3 is still on track for this year.

Increased R&D costs, OLED model manufacturing challenges, weak yen exchange rate, and just general lower sales lead to the decrease in operating profit. Nintendo predicts a further drop in the coming FY as the Switch continues to fill demand and fall off.

As for games, 235.07 million Switch games were sold in FY22, up by around 5 million from the previous year. This includes 14.65M for Shining Pearl and Brilliant Diamond and 12.64M for Legends: Arceus. Given folks double-dipping plus the remakes being out for longer, that probably means around the same audience for both.

There was also another casual 10 million sales for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, because that game will never die. There’s just under 6 million OLED model Switches out there. The latest title, Kirby and the Forgotten Land managed 2.1 million in two weeks.

Finally, on upcoming games, Breath of the Wild 2, Metroid Prime 4, and Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp all got a look in the launch schedule table. The first had a date of Spring 2023 attached, while the others are simply TBA. It’s the first mention of Advance Wars since it’s indefinite delay earlier this year.
