Developer Iron Galaxy has announced that it is moving 2013 fighting game Killer Instinct on to more modern server infrastructure. The developer revealed in a blog post that maintaining the game has become challenging due to its reliance on legacy servers.

Killer Instinct‘s legacy services are now being moved on to PlayFab services in a process that is set to take the next several months. The studio makes it clear that this is a quality-of-life update, and as such does not include any new content or changes to the game’s balancing and tuning.

With the first build making use of the new servers being out now, the studio has also warned that some players might see initial load times of longer than normal—averaging at around 40-60 seconds, but potentially going up to minutes depending on connection speed.

Xbox players will also be temporarily unable to buy KI Gold. Until a backend change is completed, KI Gold will not be available to purchase from directly in the game, and players will instead have to navigate through the Xbox website on to the Killer Instinct Store Page.

The update also brings with it a couple of additional fixes that you can read about below.

  • Fixed an issue where both players would lose points after leaving Ranked mode on Steam.
  • Fixed an issue where characters would appear locked for some PC Game Pass or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate users playing Definitive Edition on PC. All characters should now be unlocked.
