Judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan have seen some incredible talents so far during the latest season of American Idol’s audition stage. However, the musical legends weren’t expecting to meet another titan of the industry this week when a famous face made a surprise appearance on the ABC competition to help his daughter audition.

Perry’s jaw was on the floor when she recognised Dave Stewart of Eurythmics during the latest American Idol auditions.

She and Richie both recognised the 1980s star when he walked in with his guitar and daughter Kaya in tow.

“Oh wait, what? You say the backup musician is who?” Richie exclaimed.

And Perry quipped: “Oh my god, blast from the past.”

She revealed she was drawn to American Idol as it allows performers to showcase their own songs, which she did with a performance of her own track, This Tattoo.

Once they had finished, Stewart joked: “This is much more difficult than getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”

The ‘80s legend didn’t need to worry, however, as all three judges gave the father-daughter duo a resounding standing ovation after the performance.

Richie was clearly impressed by Kaya’s vocals and songwriting talent, and delivered a glowing verdict in his critique.

“I’m going to tell you the truth because the truth is what we are about,” he said.

“So, first of all, from the songwriting part of it and the pressure of being here, I give you so much props.

“And the fact that your dad showed up, I give him props. I mean, there’s a whole lot of props here.

“In the midst of all of this, you slayed it. I love the tone of your voice and you’re an artist; you’re really an artist.”
