John Wick 4 Will Be “Deeper In Terms of the Code of the Assassin,” Laurence Fishburne Says

After facing delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the John Wick franchise is beginning to set the stage for its fourth entry, filling out its cast with series newcomers like martial arts star Donnie Yen. Now, Laurence Fishburne has confirmed his return for the sequel, reprising his role as The Bowery King. In a recent interview with Collider, Fishburne discussed John Wick: Chapter 4, extending praise for the film’s script.

“I read the script. It’s really, really cool. As much as it’s the same world as the other three films, it’s just deeper,” Fishburne said. “It’s much deeper in terms of the code of the assassin and the relationship that he has with one character in particular, who I think Mr. Watanabe is playing… is really the heart and soul of it.”

Collider clarified that “Mr. Watanabe” referred to the name of a new character, as opposed to an additional cast member.

Fishburne also stated that he will be flying to Berlin for the film, lining up with reports that the sequel would primarily shoot in the German capital, as well as Paris.

John Wick: Chapter 4 represents somewhat of a new direction for the franchise, as the production is continuing without series creator and screenwriter Derek Kolstad. Instead, the upcoming sequel will be written by Michael Finch, whose previous credits include Predators and Hitman: Agent 47.

Lionsgate has scheduled John Wick: Chapter 4 to hit theaters on May 27, 2022. Additionally, a spinoff TV series titled The Continental is still in development.
