Japan’s best-selling games of 2023, hardware rankings

New data from Famitsu has provided a listing of the best-selling games in Japan for 2023 plus hardware rankings.

In terms of software, it was a clean sweep for Switch with all ten games coming from that platform. Nintendo had three million sellers with Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and Pikmin 4.

5. [NSW] Momotaro Dentetsu World: Chikyuu wa Kibou de Mawatteru! – 795,681 / NEW
6. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 617,223 / 5,631,598
7. [NSW] Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe – 514,581 / NEW
8. [NSW] Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 – 510,477 / NEW
9. [NSW] Splatoon 3 – 503,312 / 4,191,126
10. [NSW] Super Mario RPG – 447,687 / NEW

You can also find the results for the hardware rankings below. Nintendo was on top here as well with Switch selling over four million units.

1. Nintendo Switch – 4,062,609 / 31,786,656
2. PlayStation 5 – 2,587,468 / 4,964,857
3. Xbox Series X|S – 141,712 / 540,107
4. PlayStation 4 – 73,292 / 9,491,059

With Switch selling four million units in Japan last year, the system has set a new record in the region. That’s the highest sales for a platform in its seventh year – it’s more than one million units ahead of the DS at the same time.
