Co-CEO James Gunn shared some insights into how DC Studios’ writers’ room operates when it comes to meetings & communicating.

Article Summary

  • James Gunn discusses DC Studios’ writers’ room dynamics and collaborative process.
  • DCU brain trust features top talents like Tom King and Christal Henry.
  • Gunn dismisses inaccurate “Superman: Legacy” logline, clarifies filming start.
  • Team provides creative feedback, diverging from typical studio notes system.

It will be one year – as of January 31st – since DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn & Peter Safran rolled out the first wave of films & television series that made of “Chapter 1 – Gods and Monsters” as the duo began weaving together a new DCU. But they weren’t venturing into universe-building on their own, announcing a writers’ room/ DCU brain trust that includes comics, Film & television heavy-hitters Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, The Human Target), Christal Henry (HBO’s Watchmen, The First), Christina Hudson (Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), Bumblebee), Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, Netflix’s Daredevil, The Martian), and Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight, The Umbrella Academy). Now, Gunn is offering some insight into how the team operates – specifically, how often it meets and communicates.

“We gathered a few times at the beginning of all of this to map out some overarching concepts & ideas & stories,” Gunn shared on Threads. “Other than that, I trust in quite a few of the writers individually to read & comment & give notes on scripts, keeping things more in the creative sphere as opposed to your typical studio notes. Most have given notes on ‘Legacy,’ for instance (along with other screenwriters & filmmakers).” Here’s a look at a screencap of Gunn’s response:

DC Studios: Superman: Legacy March 2024 Start; No Fan of Logline

“Not sure where this logline came from. I didn’t write it. It has elements of truth (obviously based on things I’ve said in the past). But I wouldn’t describe the plot this way, & I wouldn’t call Clark a cub reporter. He’s a thirty-year-old full-on reporter,” Gunn penned in his social media response from last month, offering an even clearer picture of Clark’s age and career level at the point when we meet him while also disavowing the logline included in a number of production lists. As for when filming is expected to begin, Gunn added, “But, yeah, we shoot in March. I’m grateful every day our production team worked their asses off to keep things going through the strikes. Forces impelled us to stop many times – & if we had, we’d never make July 2025.”

Set for a July 11, 2025, premiere, DC Studios’ Superman: Legacy stars (so far) David Corenswet (Hollywood) as Superman/Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane. In addition, the cast includes Nicholas Hoult (The Great) as Lex Luthor,  Isabela Merced (Sicario: Day of the Soldado) as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho. Now, here’s a look back at the screencap we shared prior to Gunn’s confirmation that listed March 2024 as being the start of filming:
