James Gunn Confirms Some Reports About DC Studios – Good Luck Figuring Out Which Ones

On the heels of Thursday’s report that Wonder Woman 3 is not moving forward in its current form, James Gunn took to Twitter in his role as an executive and co-head of DC Studios to clarify. That project being canceled, along with a slew of other potential DC movie updates were first reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Gunn, for his part, took to Twitter, writing that some of it “is true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true, and some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not.”

Confused? Gunn further elaborated on Twitter that after he and producer Peter Safran chose to take the reins of the Warner Bros. Discovery division in October that they “chose to helm DC Studios knowing we were coming into a fractious environment, both in the stories being told and in the audience itself.” Gunn continued that both executives were aware “there would be an unavoidable transitional period as we moved into telling a cohesive story across film, TV, animation and gaming… But, in the end, the drawbacks of that transitional period were dwarfed by the creative possibilities and the opportunity to build upon what has worked in DC so far and to help rectify what has not.”

Closing out the thread–and continuing a long-standing tradition Gunn has had of engaging directly with fans on questions they have about his movies and business as a storyteller–the director/executive said that he knows he and Safran “are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way, but we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the story and in service of the DC characters we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives.”

Beyond that, Gunn added, all other questions about the future of the DC Universe will have to wait. They are still figuring this all out internally, Gunn explained. Gunn and Safran are, according to Variety, expected to present their comprehensive plan for the DCU to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav sometime next week.

So which reports are true, and which aren’t? That’s the question we’re all left to figure out ourselves for now. However, eventually Gunn and Safran’s plans for the DC film and TV universe should come into sharper focus.
