Is ‘XDefiant’ coming to PS4 and Xbox One?

After years of betas, trailers, and delays, Ubisoft‘s XDefiant is finally releasing on May 21, 2024. However, the news of the release date was met with some slight worry from those who haven’t been able to upgrade to the latest consoles, as the game won’t be released on PS4 or Xbox One this month.

Is the last-gen version of the game still in the works? Was it completely cancelled or has it just been delayed to ensure the game can launch smoothly on the latest consoles? Here is what we know from Ubisoft currently.

Is ‘XDefiant’ coming to PS4 and Xbox One?

It looks like XDefiant for PS4 and Xbox One has been cancelled ahead of the game’s full launch. The platforms are absent from the official blog post announcing the launch date and the XDefiant Twitter/X account later clarified that “We wanted to keep a consistent standard of quality for the game, so we made the decision to focus only on current-gen consoles.”

This will undoubtedly be disappointing for many players who were looking for a new shooter to try out on PS4 and Xbox One, or to find a new live service to sink their teeth into instead of Call of Duty.

There is a chance we may see the game released on these older consoles if Ubisoft is happy with the stability of the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC after a while. This desire to support older platforms could also increase if player numbers aren’t as high as Ubisoft would like, or there is enough clamouring within the community for a PS4 and Xbox version of the game.

But, we will have to wait and see to know if that is a possibility at all, especially now that we are almost four years into the generation and the technical demands of games are far outpacing what the PS4 and Xbox One are capable of.

It is even more surprising that the PS4 and Xbox versions of XDefiant aren’t releasing in May, given that you could play the recent server test in April on PS4 and Xbox One.
