Cross-platform gaming is everything at the moment. As the generations of consoles move more into the online world, people want the walls between platforms to come down. It would make sense for a game as multiplayer focused as Risk of Rain 2 to be cross-platform. But, sadly, the answer isn’t a simple yes or no.
In some cases, there is generational cross-platforming and, for some, there is nothing at all.
If you’re looking to play with your friends on other consoles, you’re out of luck. If you want to play co-operatively with them on other storefronts, however, it’s now achievable. The game is available on both Steam and the Epic Games Store. Previously, it wasn’t possible to play the game between the two storefronts/launchers, but with a recent update, all PC players can play together.
When multiplayer is opened for the first time, a prompt will pop up in a browser window asking to link Steam and Epic Games accounts together. Simply inviting a friend or using their Epic ID in a browser will enable cross-platform play. You must enable the cross-play setting in the menu.
Sadly cross-play is not possible on Xbox, although it is playable cross-generation. If you’re running it on the latest Xbox, you can play with older consoles. With the number of games on the market with complete cross-platform capabilities, it’s curious to see a game as simple as Risk of Rain 2 not to have it.
Again, it is the same case as the Xbox. Intergenerational play is enabled, but cross-platform is not. At least you won’t have to buy a new console if you’re looking to play against other Sony fans.
Risk of Rain 2 is neither cross-platform nor cross-generational. If you’re on a Switch, you can only play with other Switch players online.
So, is Risk of Rain 2 cross-platform?
In a nutshell, no. The development team is always working on updates and changes to the game making it better and more approachable. I would be happy to see cross-platform capabilities really open the game up to a wider online audience.
