Is Horizon Forbidden West Steam Deck compatible? Answered

Now that Guerrilla’s game is available on PC, many questions arise. Can my computer run this game without combusting? Will I be able to complete this game before Dragon’s Dogma 2 releases? And, will it run on my Steam Deck? My answer is: probably, no, and let’s find out.

Can you play Horizon Forbidden West on your Steam Deck?

Now with the main series of Horizon games released on PC – maybe someday we will see the VR game Call of the Mountain with expanded VR headset support, I don’t know – the idea of playing Forbidden West in the comfort of your Steam Deck is something that many players have already experienced with Zero Dawn and already eager to replicate that with its sequel. Fortunately, the developers have confirmed that Horizon Forbidden West is supported and playable on Steam Decks all around the world.

Controller support as well as Steam Deck compatibility was one of the announcements presented by the devs before the game release. And while I still find it funny seeing PlayStation games being played with an Xbox controller, here is the full list of controllers supported in Horizon Forbidden West:

Horizon Forbidden West controller support

  • DualSense (PlayStation 5)
  • DualSense Edge (PlayStation 5)
  • DualShock 4 (PlayStation 4)
  • Xbox One
  • Xbox 360
  • XInput compatible controllers
  • Steam Deck

As you can see, Steam Deck is listed as a fully supported controller, which will probably run similarly to Zero Dawn. That is, of course, 720p at 30 frames per second at most. Now, while I do enjoy my 4K 144hz master race mumbo jumbo, playing a modern and extremely beautiful game such as Forbidden West on the go is a great feature for many new players who will experience the franchise for the first time.

Just be sure to modify the graphics’ quality to suit your stability needs and take into account the Forbidden West system requirements provided by the devs. You will probably have to set for a Low or Very Low preset, so make sure to fiddle around with each setting until you see that your experience begins to look a little bit smoother. Enjoy the base Forbidden West and Burning Shores expansion while you are stuck in traffic or during a journey inside a plane.
